THE SPACE RACE AND WHY IT’S STUPID

GRACE IN SPACE

February 15, 2023

Never in my life had I seen something as petty on such a national scale as the Space Race. If you’ve been living under a rock or just haven’t heard Neil Armstrong’s famous “One small step for man” phrase, this was no ordinary race.

If you’re looking for the facts and timeline, I’d advise you to go somewhere else (like here). I am simply rambling about why the Space Race is stupid!

To start, I cannot deny the amazing technological advances that came from this petty race. We truly would not be where we were today if the U.S. didn’t want to best the Russians and leave their mark on the Moon.

However, it seems today that the influence of this marathon lingers still today. There was the creation of the United States’ Space Force and of course the creation of SpaceX, which all center around cosmological and aeronautical technical advancements.

The attitude towards these advancements hasn’t really changed; it’s still a very competitive environment save for the inhuman, fast pace expected of all the “lowly” and incredibly intelligent workers. People are still being burnt out and left to dry, but at least there’s some kind of a moral compass.

If it weren’t for the Space Race, perhaps more brilliant minds would be alive to give input today. Too many rushed projects cost the lives of scientists and astronauts alike. Here’s to the modern day, and the hope that lives lost due to this project are way more few and far between.
