GET OUT! WHY OUTDOOR CLASSES ARE A GOOD IDEA

WHEN THE WEATHER'S NICE, WE SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUTDOOR LEARNING

June 17, 2021

Lincoln Park students should be able to have classes outside when the weather is nice. It can be beneficial to the students and their learning experience.

It will give the students sunlight and fresh air. If the classes were outside students would be able to spread out more, it’s good for social distancing. It’ll help keep students awake and ready instead of being stuck inside, sitting at desks all day. Teachers could use one of those whiteboards on wheels to drag out or a chalkboard.

This study states: “A number of studies have documented increased school performance through outdoor education. In addition, outdoor education effectively employs a greater range of children’s intelligence.” It adds, “Studies have shown that students who learn outdoors develop: a sense of self, independence, confidence, creativity, decision making and problem solving skills, empathy towards others, motor skills, self-discipline and initiative.”

Even some students agree that classes should be held outside. In a conversation with my fellow Writing and Publishing major, Emma Impellicceiri, she stated, “I think it’ll be helpful to get some fresh air. I think it will make learning more fun. Yes, I would prefer learning outdoors rather than inside.”

Learning outside can be great for students and schools may see an improvement. You’ll never know until you try.
