Hi guys! Today, I want to address the Lil Nas X situation with his controversial music video, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name )” and I want to express my feelings on it.

*DISCLAIMER* This is my opinion on the music video and how I feel about it. This article is not here to offend or upset anyone. Thank you.

Lil Nas X dropped his new song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and alongside that, he also dropped his music video for it. The video sparked Twitter fights and the whole internet broke.

Lil Nas X explained in many tweets and replies to fans and haters that he made the song to open up a safe space for LGBTQ+ kids that can’t show their true selves because of family or being scared, that it is normal and okay for them to come out and he also wanted to express who he is.

Now, what are my thoughts?

I think the video and the song is not only iconic, but it opens so many doors for the LGBTQ+ community and allows others to feel safe and loved. I thought the music video was fun and creative. I really liked the message and the storyline that he made because I feel like that the message he was making is an eye-opener and also opens up and talks about ongoing issues with different religions and how some feel about the LGBTQ+ community. It is important to talk about these issues because many who are in the community are hiding their true selves from the world because of the belief that they are “going to hell” or the fear of getting hurt or hate from their familes and friends.

Many also didn’t like the satanic imagery of the video and how he was giving the devil a lap dance.

I understand some might feel offended by the imagery, but it doesn’t make sense to me because many different bands and musicians have used satanic imagery in their videos and never got “cancelled” for it.

For example, Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco turned into a demon in his music video for “Emperor’s New Clothes” and it was iconic, but Lil Nas X is doing the same thing in a different concept, but is getting hate.

I feel like the hate that he is receiving is unfair to him because he seems very proud of the work that he has put into his music video and song. The song itself is very important and meaningful. He has grown as an artist and seeing him grow into the person he wants to be is very heartwarming to me.

As someone who was never a huge Lil Nas X fan, I will say, seeing him grow and become an amazing artist has changed my mind on his music and I’m proud to see him be his true self!

Thank you for joining me today and let’s jam to some music on the next Meg’s Playlist.
