For today’s column, I want to talk about our upcoming prom theme: Rio De Carnival.
Rio is known for its bright color schemes and features. Now, some might be deciding to pick a dress that goes with this theme, but I’m, personally, going down the route of straying away from the theme.
Tickets were due Friday, May 15, and I’m assuming most of you already have your dresses and suits or are waiting for them to arrive, but I’d like to talk about prom color schemes. You may have your outfit picked out, but you may still be asking what colors you can pair with it for your flowers, tie, or any accessory. Specifically, your favorite color schemes for dresses and even suits.
The following section headers are for your primary color.
LIGHT/BABY BLUE
I want to get specific with this, so bear with me. For those doing a lighter blue, I suggest going with a grey. Not for your flowers, but for a suit. Having a grey suit over a blue shirt or even just a blue tie would be nice. For the ladies, if you have a blue dress, go with white flowers and some silvers. Listen, you could even do the yellow I was talking about above.
DARK/NAVY BLUE

I will forever die on this hill. Yellow goes so well with a nice navy blue. A navy suit with a yellow tie and flower would look perfect. And for girls, whether your dress is blue or yellow, pair it with the opposite color for your flowers, although a blue dress with yellow flowers would be the better pick, in my opinion. If you aren’t feeling that much color, though, go with a simple grey. However, I heavily suggest the yellow.
DARK RED
I’m obviously biased on my column, but I hate lighter red outfits, so I’m going to focus on dark reds. This is one I thought hard about. I don’t want to suggest black, even though that would be perfect, so I’m going to suggest white flowers with touches of gold. For suits, have a white undershirt with white flowers, and you can add gold jewelry throughout.
DARK GREEN

Before I start, I want to clarify: I never want to see any of you pretty people showing up in a neon green outfit. For the best, just don’t. Hear me out: gold. Imagine you have an olive green, sage, or even forest green outfit, and it’s paired with gold. Honestly, I think that it is the best you can get. I hate being basic, but an alternative for gold would be a white or cream color. It’s simple and pairs with the pop of the green.
PURPLE
Now, I’m lowkey going to be a color repeater, but come on, the obvious choice here is yellow. Especially for those who are a Tangled fan, this is just perfect. A nice light purple dress with vibrant yellow accessories would be *chef’s kiss.* However, I know not everyone wants to go down this road, so another option would be if you had a dark purple dress, go with a simple black.
BLACK

I’m one of the people who chose to get a black dress, but what colors go well with black? Here is the thing, any color can go with black. If you still want some suggestions, I think pink and purple go best with black. You can even go with some nice red roses. Having some bright color with your black dress or suit can align with the theme. However, if you are really feeling it, go with a full black suit. Not everyone can pull it off, but you might be able to.
Bottom line: you can ignore everything I’m saying, or you could take what I say into consideration. It is your prom; you do what you want. I can’t wait to see everyone’s outfits!
