After watching the trailer for Backrooms, I was left skeptical and unsure if I’d enjoy the film when it releases.
Turning the Backrooms into a movie is risky, as it’s meant to be atmospheric without overexplanation ruining its ambiguity. I don’t exactly understand how it’s supposed to work as a movie with an entire plot, characters, and (possibly) answers when it focuses so heavily on the unknown. I’m worried that there will be a lot of unnecessary character drama and constant dialogue that may ruin the original horror concept.
There weren’t any monsters clearly shown in the trailer, which does provide me with some hope that there won’t be an over-reliance on creatures. It’s meant to be a psychological horror, rather than someone being literally chased by something. That’s not to say that some Backrooms’ lore doesn’t include monsters, but I hope that the film puts an emphasis on isolation, instead.
My first thought when I heard about the film was: “How the hell can this concept be an almost two-hour-long movie?” Typically, it’s short-form content, so I’m curious to know how the pacing will work and what could possibly transpire that will retain people’s attention.
I understand that I sound like a hater, but I’m questioning how everything will play out. I’m not completely hopeless about it, as the atmosphere and the style seem like they will stay true to the backrooms. The visuals look promising, especially because of the signature yellow walls. Also, I’m pumped about the found-footage style.
I anticipate that it’ll blow up like FNAF because of its loyal fandom, even if it turns out poorly. I guess we won’t know until it releases, and either way, I’m excited to see it!
