Coachella is a very popular and famed music festival held in California that began in 1999. This year marks the 27th year of the festival.
Almost as famous as the many musical guests who perform and act, are the many different outfit choices and themes we see throughout the festival. For this column, I decided to look back at the years of fashion presented at Coachella and talk about it.
2001
Back then, Coachella didn’t have its staple as boho fashion as it does now. Attendees chose to lean more towards comfort and more relaxed outfits. There was no set in stone themes yet, so most outfits looked like your typical early 2000s summer attire.
2002 – 2004
Only a year later, people started bringing glitter, wings, and lots of pink. Eventually, the introduction of wide brimmed hats, like you see in a Kentucky Derby, were brought to the table. Still, there was no trends for Coachella yet, so it was a wear-what-you-want type of thing.
2007 – 2010
People started to dress down in the “IDC how I look, but secretly I’m trying” outfits. Eventually, the whole fashion trend flipped when Paris Hilton determined the fashion trends. The new style: Patterned summer dresses. Most festival goers wore baseball caps, low-rise jean shorts. Oftentimes, they would be paired with a bikini top, tank top, or button-down shirt.
2012 – 2014

Beyoncé began her own trend bringing in statement belts, off the shocker T-shirts, and jean shorts. A lot of the things we see today. As people started to unwind into the Coachella fashion, they started wearing chic Cali-girl style. Colors were also started being favorited. Some people wanted more of a bohemian look, so they aimed for fringe and headbands. Some people started testing the boundaries bringing in mesh shirts or even just skipping a top.
2015 – 2019
While still proving that boho fashion is still in, people started bringing in the more up-scale outfits. Things like excessive jewelry and skirts, short and long, were brought in. These are a lot of things we see today. Y2K styles started to make a comeback. While sequins and excessive jewelry still are a clear favorite, these years showed the shift in trends as many wore low slung pants, slip dresses, and more.
2022 – 2023
Coachella returned in 2022 after a two-year break after COVID. Even though most things were the same from the old festivals, the overall vibe was more casual and relaxed. Festival goers started favoring matching outfits, bold prints, and fringe. Eventually, denim came into the spotlight, in all forms. Accessories still played a big role in styling the causal, comfortable outfits.
2024 – 2025
Cowboy trends came into play. This could be thanks to Beyonce’s album, Cowboy Carter, or even the surge in country music at the time, but who really knows. Cowboy hats and boots were everywhere, and denim was still a favorite item.
