In honor of the huge storm this weekend (March 14-15th, yes, I know by the time this is posted it will have been a while ago) that plagued our houses with power outages – I decided to make something you don’t need an oven to make. You may need a little bit of creativity, though, so if you’re not up for the challenge, leave now. Just kidding, don’t leave, just stay to read what shenanigans I was getting up to.
For this column, I decided to make puppy chow/muddy buddies. I know what you’re thinking: How would you make this if you don’t have a microwave? Well, this weekend I was over at my grandma’s house, and she has a fireplace. I simply put the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter in a Ziploc bag next to the fireplace so it could melt. Though I’m sure if you didn’t have a fireplace, you could try to warm it with your hands or – to be honest – just sit on it. It may take a while that way, though. 😉
I just followed the ingredients on the back of the Chex box:
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 9 cups Chex cereal
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
I’m sure most of you have made puppy chow, so you know how this goes, but in case you don’t: The first four ingredients, you melt and mix together. Then you put the Chex Mix in a Ziploc bag, and pour the melted mix in. After it’s fully coated, you put the powdered sugar in and once again: shake it up. I don’t really think you can go wrong with this, so, of course, this turned out to be a delicious snack. My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet treat while suffering in the cold and electricity-less house.
I have a challenge for you readers, though. Assuming by the time this is posted, you have your power back in your house, I want you to try to make it without using your microwave.
