Kai Cenat has been saying that he’s rebranding, and most of the internet says he’s lying.
I don’t think the “lying” narrative comes from him splitting with his girlfriend, or because he launched a fashion brand. It’s because, according to social media, you can’t really rebrand if there’s been a camera in your face the whole time. Because rebranding means you’re saying it’s time for a complete change, or I’m “evolving,” to become better and if people already decided who you are because of his drive to always be on camera, then it defeats the purpose.
And what makes it even worse is that he’s learning in public, learning to speak, and also read better at that.
When clips recently surfaced from Kai Cenat’s new channel of him reading, googling words, and speaking openly about his growth, the responses weren’t curious or respectful. To me, it was a mockery. You heard a lot of, “He can’t read” “Why is he googling words?” “You are just as dumb as the rest of them.” all in the span of two days.
So when these reactions were happening, I knew it wasn’t just about the rebrand. Generally, I think that people are discomforted by the reality of watching someone outgrow the version of them that made you comfortable.
And…I could be wrong and this could be entirely performative.
However, for years, Kai’s “brand” has been chaotic to me: from the mafiathons, to the viral moments, to the cancelable moments. He became almost like a caricature that the internet learned how to consume easily. And when he, or anyone else fits neatly into a box like that, any kind of real character growth feels like they’re betraying their fans.
And then they won’t ask why, cause they don’t care and I think that a lot of that ties into parasocial relationships.
That means that the shift towards fashion, discipline, and self-improvement, or what I say is trying to shift towards a quieter, slower work…the internet no matter who will rush to demean and disqualify it’s validity. “It doesn’t count.” or “You’re still online” and “Your still attention seeking when you’ve got the camera in your face the whole time.” canceled all his sincerity in one moment.
I just think it’s interesting. Looking at celebrities like this do these “shifts” and kind of try to move outside of a reality they already created for themselves. But, I want to know how you all feel in the comments so keep me posted and let me know!
