There are many different types of jeans out there. As someone who used to absolutely hate jeans with a passion and now wish I had more to fill my closet, it’s good to know what type of jeans you like most. In today’s column, I’m going to go over a few types of jeans, and talk about why I like them or why I don’t.
SHORT HISTORY OF JEANS
Before jeans became popular and part of everyday fashion, they were mostly worn to work, specifically in factories and gold mines. The first jeans were created in the 1870s and were called “waist overalls.” There are so many types of jeans today just from the twist and journey they took to get from messy-work apparel to must-have fashion.
FLARED JEANS
Flare jeans are the best, period. I’m going to forever die on this hill. This iconic, bold style began getting popular in the 1970s and has risen again since.
- Styling Tip: Keep it simple on top. The jeans, alone, are a statement piece. These jeans are great for lengthening legs and creating balance, especially with heels or platforms
CARGO JEANS
These are another type of jeans I love. Cargo jeans have adapted/borrowed a lot of details from military wear and have blended it with modern wear, most obviously being the pockets.
- Styling Tip: Best for those who like utility-inspired fashion. Most often, combat boots or some outdoor/woodsy shoes pair best.
LOW-RISE/HIGH-RISE JEANS
I’m putting these both under the same category, but personally, it’s one or the other for me and most people. I hate low-rise jeans but love high-rise jeans. Most often people wear low-rise jeans to draw attention to the midsection and torso.
- Styling Tips: Low-Rise: Cropped tops or fitted shirts are the way to go. High-Rise: Buttoned up shirt, or a tucked-in shirt (fitted or not) is an ideal way to style these jeans.
SKINNY JEANS/ANY TIGHT JEANS
Don’t worry! I saved the best for last. Please don’t take that seriously. I absolutely hate any type of tight jeans. Skinny jeans are known for their snug, tight shape. Even those these jeans are known for being flexible and tight, they are not comfortable in my opinion. Okay, I can’t lie. Skinny jeans and tight jeans are actually really cute, IF they look good on you. They just don’t look good on me.
- Styling Tip: Just don’t wear them 🙂 JK. I feel they look best with a pair of boots, an actual good belt, or any non-basic top.
As I always say, my style isn’t your style. Wear whatever you like or what’s most comfortable. Who knows; maybe my least favorite jeans will be your favorite?
