This week I watched Sarah’s Oil. This movie was about racism, and how it was harder for Sarah [the main character] to get help with drilling oil on her land, in spite of what the white people in her town wanted. The color of her skin was one of many reasons they didn’t help, and another reason was also because as a black girl, Devnan thought she shouldn’t succeed and that her “kind” shouldn’t get money or anything for the matter.

That image is Bert and his partner agreeing to help Sarah. However, even though Bert agreed to help, Devnan was finding how to put a stop to this and even find a way to try and claim the land as his own.
It turns out that there is oil on the land, and this drives Devnan even more in his pursuits to undermine Sarah and steal the land from her. Also, this isn’t the first time he’s done this, and he’s done so much including killing kids to get what he wants.
Crazy, right? A grown man going out his way to kill kids just for land. Don’t you worry, though, Sarah is okay. We can’t say the same for some of her classmates, though, can we?
The funny thing is, this is based on a true story. It’s crazy how cruel our world used to be, and, I mean, it still is, but can we be so for real? We are killing kids over land and oil. A grown white man is, may I add. If I was Sarah, I wouldn’t know what to do. I wouldn’t even have kept the land as I would’ve been too afraid.

A happy ending, I know, and so, for that, I would only have to rate this movie a 10/10. I was actually in between an eight and a 10 only because it does hurt a little that it’s based on a true story. Sometimes it hurts to know what actually happened back in the day even when I have a general idea on it. Let this be a lesson to treat everyone equally.
