Zara Larsson, a pop artist you have probably heard at least one song from, but probably didn’t recognize the name behind it, released her newest album, Midnight Sun, on Sept. 26th and has officially pushed herself into the main pop girl group.
If you’ve been on TikTok the past couple of summers then I’m sure you’ve seen the “Symphony” dolphin trend, and most likely even her newest “Lush Life” dance trend on your for you page.
I found this album really fun, yet also unique from the other bodies of work I’ve heard from her! It’s a blend of Y2k pop, cyber fantasy, and eurosummer.
The lead single and title track, “Midnight Sun” was not what I was expecting when it started. It started out with a more poppy sound before the chorus jumped into the cyber and rave-like beats. Personally, I don’t think I’ll listen to this song often, but it is fun for a party song.
My favorite track is the second one called “Blue Moon.” I’m a sucker for songs that start with the chorus. This track is also on the calmer side compared to others in this album, but it still added the techno sounds to it really well. It also ends with an outro which is usually a hit or miss for me. However, this outro added to the overall vibe, and I liked it.
The last single, “Pretty Ugly,” was a banger! It started out stronger than I thought it would because, for whatever reason, I thought it would sound like “Pretty isn’t Pretty” by Olivia Rodrigo, which highlights the impossible beauty standard in today’s time, but no. Larsson sings about a girl finally snapping and losing control after a break up. I think this song should definitely become a new crashout song for the girls.
All in all Midnight Sun is a fun party album that shows off a new side to Zara Larsson that hasn’t been shown a lot!
