Lincoln Park’s Semi-Winter Formal is returning on February 14. Many people find themselves excited for this event, but it also leaves me, and most likely other people, wondering: what do you wear?
We all know dances have some type of reputation for dresses and suits. For homecoming, women traditionally wear shorter dresses. For prom, there’s typically longer dresses. It’s the same for men, too. Men typically save their nicer suits for prom. Like any other dance, there are no specific guidelines to follow (except following school dress code), but does a winter formal have any non-existent “rule”?
LONG DRESSES
From what I found and noticed, most women often lean towards wearing long dresses. This can be due to many factors, including the weather. Since it is a winter dance, having a floor-length dress helps, but it also isn’t required.
I personally am wearing a much shorter dress (mostly because it was my back-up Fall Ball dress) that follows some of the other things I will talk about later.
WINTER COLOR SCHEME
Another thing I’ve noticed is that women, as well as men, tend to wear colors tied with winter. These colors can include blues, whites, and many others. Most often I see different shades of blues, but I’ve also seen many other colors that looked amazing. These colors obviously aren’t limited. I have a friend that wore a brown dress, and I absolutely loved it.
Back to what I’m wearing, I went with a lighter blue (I know, very original) that has some silver rhinestones on it.
ACCESSORIES
Accessories mostly depend on what color and style you are going for. One thing I’d recommend is, if you are wearing a shorter dress, or even one without sleeves, find a cute faux fur coat, shawl, chic wrap around, or anything to keep you warm for the outside journey.
Again, I’m going to be wearing a white fur coat, or jacket, with my dress.
OTHERS/EXTRA TIPS
- Thick material: One thing you could do is look for a dress with thicker materials or long sleeves. Although only a small portion of your time will be spent outside, the little details always help.
- Key Tip: Wear what you are comfortable with. No one is going to care what kind of dress or suit you show up with. Just be yourself
Just remember: it’s just a school dance. There is nothing specific you are meant to wear. These are just things I found that most people tend to wear.
