I went into this movie with low expectations, especially considering Netflix’s track record of producing horrible movies. However, Netflix proved me wrong with this newest incarnation of Frankenstein.
Producer Guillermo del Toro truly honored Mary Shelley’s original story, and I’m impressed by the amount of thought and effort that went into the film. I’m a huge fan of how the movie included narration from both Victor’s and the Creature’s points of view.
Of course, the film didn’t exactly follow the Frankenstein novel, but I don’t think this was a bad thing. I see Frankenstein as an artistic interpretation that focuses more on human emotions, rather than emphasizing the consequences of scientific overreach. Overall, this gave it a fresh perspective with emotional depth.
The film was historically accurate, particularly with the costume designs. Elizabeth’s wardrobe was a beautiful example of what costuming looked like in the 1850s. Side note: I loved Mia Goth’s performance for this character.
Speaking of costume designs, the Creature’s appearance was different from the monster that people typically envision for Frankenstein–green skin with screws and bolts. Unlike Shelley’s monster, the Creature looks more human-like.
In the film, the Creature had smooth gray-white skin with patchwork designs. Honestly, I prefer this interpretation because it’s a bit more realistic. It genuinely looks like Victor sewed and attached pieces of skin/body parts together. Also, unlike the color green, the Creature’s skin color is a better match to cold, dead skin.
The overall look to this film was visually striking because of its gothic atmosphere. There was dramatic weather, ancient castles, and candlelit interiors. I’m grateful that they didn’t try to modernize everything and that the world Shelley created was preserved and showcased beautifully.
For once, I’m praising an actor for proving me wrong: Jacob Elordi. I did not expect such a great performance from him. It felt as though the Creature was a role created for him to play.
If you have Netflix, I highly recommend giving Frankenstein a watch!
