Nowadays, everyone knows what a quarter-zip is. This Gen Z trend has taken over FYPs and young men’s closets, becoming more than just a simple fashion choice. A style once connected with big businesses, suburban dads, and golf course bros has been reclaimed recently by younger Black audiences.
Thanks to TikTok, what once started as a silly video by Jason Gyamfi used to originally mock the style of corporate attire has transformed into more of a cultural movement. It can be seen with men wearing the classic quarter-zip, typically with a matcha drink, and even paired with a tie, but this fashion choice is more than just a trend.
THE MEANING BEHIND THE TREND
The fashion trend isn’t just about looking polished; it’s a way for men to present confidence and maturity, especially at a time where stereotypes towards age and race still linger.

Adopting a new, cleaner, more defined look has become a way to reclaim what professionalism looks like. It shows how clothing can shape perception. Gen Z has always cared how fashion is preserved in relation to community and self-worth, and this movement just provides a clear example.
The trend, though not targeted towards Black men, has gained more traction within Black fashion culture. Many young Black men see the quarter-zip trend as a way to elevate their personal style while also staying tied with the broader movement of maturity self-definition.
THE MOVE AWAY FROM NIKE TECH STEREOTYPE
One of the biggest drivers of the trend is the push to distance personal style stereotype connected with Nike Tech. Nike Tech has been widely popular throughout college campuses, basketball circles, and Hip Hop fashion. Not only are they connected within these circles, they’ve also been unfairly linked to negative assumptions, specifically towards Black men.
Many people have shared that, despite the comfort and the overall style choice of Nike Tech, people will associate it with the wrong things. However, the quarter-zip offers a different narrative. It provides a shift to show who Gen Z men are without the baggage of the negative stereotypes.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
No one really knows where the trend will go or how long it will last, but it has clearly made room for conversation. Even if the style eventually fades–like all trends do–the mindset and movement shown through the trend will always stick.
For now, the quarter-zip is having its moment, and the meaning behind it is deeper than just a comfortable winter outfit.
