When Black people say, “We’re all brothers and sisters,” I think it’s a bold face lie. A lie that isn’t only harmful but imperative to the downfall of African-American people as Americans in a contemporary society.
In today’s times, I think Black people have had problems understanding what one united front is. And this could be because of a multitude of different reasons, however, as we tread the lines of the country being divided between red, and blue, we lose focus on who isn’t friend or foe.
Yet when you look to uncover our inherent issues, underneath all that, we are all African-Americans to the root.
That’s your way into brotherhood or sisterhood, being an African-American! We are ALL Black, we are all experiencing the same struggles, yet there are nuances to what brotherhood and sisterhood is, and how some people will claim to support it, yet include and disclude people who don’t fit into their agenda of what it should look like.
Many times my own family has said they support Black people, but I dare to ask them, what does supporting Black people mean and what is the line you draw between supporting them, and not supporting them? Oftentimes they then go onto saying that they don’t like trans people or gay men, bisexual women, and rant on and on about stuff concerning Black people of different orientation that don’t alight with a heteronormative society.
I think that this idea that we can create this “inclusive” environment, but then not include everyone is just not supportive to the broader community.
There was a reported study that came out by the The Human Right Campaign saying that over 30 Black trans and gender expansive people were violently murdered all in one year, just because of their identities, and I think that when we as a people see this struggle it’s not the time to play identity politics but to come together and find the root of the issue.
Without this we as a people are lost, and there is so much fault to modern leaders with social influence. One of those people is Dr. Umar Johnson, who has repeatedly fought for “Black” people, but is homophobic and against black men being with one another.
You can’t claim to be a messiah, and then go and lead your people to death. That’s contradictory to what the message is.
