THE PROS AND CONS OF ZEVIA
HEALTH IS WHAT I'M ABOUT
October 9, 2020
Before I get into what Zevia is, I will give you some general information on what Stevia is. According to the article Everything You Need to Know About Stevia, “…[Stevia is] a plant that is a member of the chrysanthemum family, a subgroup of the Asteraceae family (ragweed family).”
This plant is the main component to the brand Zevia, which is an alternative soda option that mimics the flavors of traditional sodas – without the calories, or unhealthy sugars.
One pro of this drink is that the taste mocks the flavor of traditional soda. Sean Evans wrote of the imitations in his article for Men’s Health; “They’ve tackled big soda, with versions of more than a dozen popular sodas, including Mountain Zevia, Dr. Zevia and Cola…[As well as]… soda, energy, sparkling water, drink mixers, and organic tea.”
By drinking Zevia you can still feel like you’re drinking soda without feeling guilty about the artificial dyes and other unnecessary ingredients. Personally, I found that Zevia’s version of Ginger Ale was the most accurate in taste. The only difference was that the Zevia drink was clear and traditional Ginger Ale has a yellow tint.
Evans’ reiterated that, “Spence [The CEO of Zevia] has more than 25 years of experience in the natural food industry… Moreover, he’s completed more than 40 triathalons, and consistently trains in martial arts. Spence understands that your body needs premium fuel to achieve its maximum output and wants to provide healthier options to help people unlock their best potential.”
Spence has personal experience with striving to be vigorous in his everyday life, so he created Zevia to give people that same motivation and energy. So, for people like me and you, it’s a nice blend of being healthy, but I also don’t have to give up on drinks that have a burst of flavor.
But, of course with any investment it is important to look at the cons.
Annette McDermott, the writer behind Everything You Need to Know About Stevia said, “In some people, Stevia products made with sugar alcohols may cause digestive problems, such as bloating and diarrhea.”
I will say that when I first tried this drink, my body was not used to the sugar alternative (Stevia). It’s smart to remember that it may take a week or so for your body to become more digestively adjusted. Furthermore, your taste buds will be tricked to start craving this instead of that Coca Cola that’s calling your name.
Now after all this convincing you might be asking what’s the price? Compared to Soda, which is usually around the price of $2.50, Zevia for a six-pack is around $4.98. If you think about it, this brand is definitely worth investing in so further down the line you won’t have to (hopefully) worry about hospital bills for a health condition you could have prevented.
If you have your $4.98 ready to spend, this is where you can find it and buy it. Sasha Boyette, a seventh-grader from Pittsburgh tells readers, “… [Y]ou can’t go to your local Walgreens and buy it. You have to go to Giant Eagle and buy it. Or Target to get it.”
Who doesn’t love a good Target run?
