Welcome back, feasters! It’s been a long summer, and I spent it exploring new restaurants to introduce to you. I don’t know about you, but I love eating gelato on a hot summer day. That’s why my new go-to place is Black Dog Wood Fired Pizza in Ambridge!
In the past, I’ve written about Ambridge’s efforts to modernize the area, and Black Dog Wood Fired is another result of their pursuit. With virtually no wait for a table, this modest building has a cozy, minimalistic interior with scattered tables and orange vinyl seating. In the back of the room, where the register sits, is a gelato bar with flavors that alternate each week. My favorite part of the establishment is the stained glass mural of old Ambridge that hangs high and proud on the left wall of the building. This room reflects Ambridge’s long history, while creating a serene environment for its customers.
The staff is excellent and very attentive. They are polite and always remember orders without a hitch, despite their lack of numbers. Teen workers are encouraged and hired often to connect with the youth and provide a breath of fresh air to the environment. Overall, the staff and atmosphere are a 10/10.
Food-wise, Black Dog Wood Fired is flawless and extremely quick. For an appetizer, I highly recommend their whipped ricotta dip. It comes with freshly sliced bread and has honey and pistachios sprinkled on top of the dip. Typically, I don’t like ricotta cheese, but I can’t stop eating this dip. It’s creamy, sweet, and just a bit salty. Paired with the bread, it’s a perfect pre-meal snack.
Entree-wise, you can’t go wrong with the Stracciatella Margherita Pizza. I have never tasted a pizza as delicious and fresh as this one. The stracciatella is stretchy and salty; the margherita sauce is smooth and sweet. Combined, these flavors make for the perfect pizza. I’d choose this meal over anything. The pizza tastes even better when the crust is dipped into the Whipped Ricotta Dip.
Another great option is the Classic Spaghetti Alla Marinara. This dish is your classic spaghetti elevated with seasoning and Black Dog’s signature marinara sauce. Similar to the margherita sauce, the marinara sauce is sweet and savory at the same time. The meatballs pair well with the sauce, as they’re seasoned thoroughly and have a bit of a kick to them that contradicts the sauce. Make sure you have a drink handy, though, because the spice can become a lot after a while. The food, overall, is a 10/10.
Black Dog Wood Fired Pizza is a valuable addition to Ambridge. The food, atmosphere, and service are above expectations. The prices are a bit high, but it’s worth it. For the first time in Feast With Felicity history, this establishment will receive a perfect 10/10!
