Rules in fashion are most often more like guidelines than a mandated, strict rule. Not everyone follows them, but most people do. There are a lot of so-called ‘rules’ in fashion. Some are ones I go by, but some are just ridiculous. I’m going to talk about ones that are reasonable to me and the ones that just don’t make sense.
MIXING JEWELRY
One big one is to not mix gold and silver jewelry. While this is something a lot of people frown upon, it actually isn’t a bad thing. A lot of nice outfits come from mixing things you would never think would go together. And it’s not just gold and silver. You can mix and style different metals. Rose, white, black, or even different colored stones can work out beautifully together, as well.
NO WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY
Another guideline that is way outdated is about wearing white after Labor Day. White is most often associated with summertime and is said to be put away after the holiday. It originated from the belief that wearing white Post-Labor day was a way the wealthy would separate themselves from the working class. This is definitely an outdated myth we should break. It doesn’t matter when you wear a certain color.
SHOULDN’T WEAR LEATHER IN SPRING/SUMMER
I’m not super strict for when you decide to wear leather, but I mostly agree with this guideline. They do have leather shorts and skirts for the warmer months, but I personally would never wear them. Leather in general is just a fabric I hate wearing, especially in the warmer seasons. If you are comfortable, don’t stop wearing different fabrics because the season changed. Each one looks and feels better on others.
STICK TO ONE PATTERN
This is another one I’m not too strict with, but I haven’t seen a lot that go well. Yes, some outfits that use multiple patterns work out really well but most don’t. Sticking to one pattern per outfit is a pretty good tip. I prefer having a pattern complimented with a plain color.
These are just a few rules I like and don’t like. The key thing is to wear what you want and what you like. So called “rules” shouldn’t stop you from dressing how you feel. Make your own rules, or break some old ones.
