I think people pass this book because of its cliche cover and title, but it really is missing a gold mine. Imagine Hunger Games, Twilight, and A Court of Thorns and Roses had a book baby, and this book would be it. There’s vampires with wings, a trial for their life, a tense enemies-to-lovers situation, and a human, female main character with some badass blades and trust issues.
This book has some of the adventures I’ve been missing in the past few books I’ve read, which I enjoyed. I’ve always liked the concept of vampires; it fascinates me. So when I read the first chapter of this book, it had me captivated.
Oraya, the main character, really interests me because she was just a girl who essentially got adopted by a vampire king. It surprises me to think she never got…eaten by anyone in the palace or at least put in danger. But I guess it makes sense because maybe she was hidden away from all of the other vampires by her adoptive father because of her guarded personality and her mistrust in others. Her father trained her to kill vampires, to push hard past the ribs, straight to the heart. Automatically being raised this way, naturally, she’s cutthroat and efficient, or unrelenting you could say. She reminds me of Katniss Everdeen, the outcast thrown into a trial with only two outcomes: life or death. Except Oraya is trained and a human surrounded by vampires who see her as a quick, bloody snack.
Raiyhn, the MMC, reminds me a LOT of Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses. He’s a man with a big ego and a snarky mouth, large wings, and a weird infatuation with the girl who always argues with him. It’s the classic ‘enemies-to-lovers’ trope. Being one of my favorite tropes, it rose very close to the top of my favorites. I would say that this book is a BUY!
