Imagine lying in bed, sleeping soundly in the comfort of your warm blankets and soft pillows, when all of a sudden, you hear something banging against your door as though the FBI were trying to break in. This is a reality for our interviewee, Kai Green, who claims to have struggled with this very unexplainable incident at least once a week, sometimes even more frequently.
“What started happening, like, a few years ago, there would be something that pushed and, like, banged against my door at night. But when I would open my door, nothing would be there.”
After a brief discussion, Kai and I came up with three possible rationales for this experience. First, he blamed his cats, who consistently roam the house at night. I found this to be reasonable enough until I asked where exactly the knocking sound was originating on his door. Kai claims that the banging wanders from the bottom to the middle of the door, which the cats cannot reach, considering their overtly small size. Checkmate.
We then went on to discuss the door itself, which, from Kai’s retelling, was “very old” and rickety. However, even if this is the case, we were quick to denounce the theory considering the timing of this banging and knocking, as it never happened during the day and only at night. We figured if it had something to do with the door, it would be a consistent pattern throughout the day rather than just the wee hours of the morning or late at night. Again, checkmate.
The most bizarre explanation Kai came up with happened to conclude the idea that his parents were just trying to mess with him. He goes on to say, “My dad thinks he’s funny. He’s not funny.”
Many believe inexplicable scratching, banging, or knocking sounds have something to do with trapped spirits communicating with the living. People tend to believe that ghosts, especially vengeful or lost ones, are eager to be seen and recognized by a living being to claim their existence on Earth. Still, they are particularly eager when they are trapped in a state where they’re unable to be heard. There are many theories concerning a spirit’s energy, negative or positive, having something to do with their ability to interact with physical objects in our world, in which they would have to compile a lot of energy and time into doing so. This is typically why we don’t see, hear, or really experience incidents such as these, as it takes so much effort for the ghost to do so. However, in Kai’s case, we see that the potential ghost is frequent with its attempts of communicating with the living (specifically Kai himself). This could mean that the ghost either has a lot of energy/strength, perhaps from the negative circumstances of its demise, a mischievous spirit who just wants to gain a reaction out of Kai, or, of course, the idea of someone from the afterlife trying to make contact with Kai explicitly.
When asked about his personal beliefs regarding the paranormal, Kai went on to state, “I’m not like a super firm believer in the paranormal or anything. If I think it was, if at all, paranormal it would have probably have to have been a ghost or something. But if it is a ghost, it needs to make up its mind because it does this on and off and I don’t like it.”
