Kass Pindel, a junior writing and publishing student, was interviewed on their experience as an artist.
“I’ve just always enjoyed art and, like, ever since I could remember I’ve just been doodling and drawing. Like, as a little kid I used to draw everything at any time I could,” said Pindel when asked about how they “got started” as an artist.
Motivation for an artist can be the hardest thing to maintain in wanting to constantly create or get inspiration. There are many ways to do so, but below is how Pindel keeps their motivation consistent.
“If I see something and I’m like, ‘oh that’s pretty I should draw something based on that,’ or, like, I’ll draw any characters that I write about,” Pindel explains. “Or, say I see a really pretty color and I’m like, ‘Oh, I should make a character based on that because I like that color, or that color palette.’ Or…I will see a photo of a landscape, and I’m like, ‘Oh I like some of those details; I should incorporate that into a character design.’”
To make said art, Pindel usually uses digital art. But sometimes they do traditional sketches and transfer the sketch to digital to finish the piece, or they use acrylic paints.
Pindel described their biggest struggle as, “…Making my own style because I just have trouble, like, seeing something and then not wanting it (their art) to look exactly like the reference. It’s ’cause I’m like, ‘Oh that’s so amazing. I wanna make something look exactly like that.’ And then I just have to stop myself and be like, ‘No I need to make it in my own style ’cause I don’t wanna copy anyone. That’s just obviously wrong.”
You might be wondering, “Oh, if they’re an artist, why aren’t they in media?” Well, Pindel did try to get into media, but they were rejected.
