The Inheritance Games, a Mystery Romance by Jennifer Lynn Barnes has gathered a lot of publicity online. While the overall rating for the book is around 4.7, some people are saying that the book is too slow-moving. Most of the lower ratings consist of the fact that they got bored while waiting for something more eventful to happen, and were tempted to put the book down in general. Another main topic of the book is Emily, a girl that two of the Hawthorne boys had been entranced by when they were younger. Some of the lower reviews also mention how many of the flights/conflicts were about her. Let’s just get into the start of the story, so you can judge for yourself.
The beginning, skipping some conflict between Avery (the main character) and her sister Libby, starts with Avery getting called into the office at her school. When she walks in, instead of seeing the principle as she had expected, Avery is introduced to a man in a sleek suit and cold eyes. A man she had never met before. Libby was sitting opposite him.
Quickly, fear for her father starts to grow. She assumed something had happened to him and this was why he was called down. The man responds by assuring her that her father was alive, and introducing himself. Grayson Hawthorne.
Libby explains that they had been receiving letters, inviting Avery to a reading of the will for Tobias Hawthorne. Tobias Hawthorne was a very rich man, a rich enough man to have one of his grandsons travel to a highschool to find one girl. Specifically, he was worth 46.2 billion dollars.
Avery learns that she had been included in Tobias’ will, and she would need to attend it.
After meeting the three other Hawthorne brothers, (youngest to oldest), Xander, Jameson, (Grayson, who she already met), and Nash, she goes to attend the reading.
Two of his workers, Andrew and Lottie Laughlin got 100,000 apiece.
His bodyguard got a toolbox.
His mother-in-law got 100,000 a year.
His daughters got enough to pay off all debts accrued by the date of his death, and a couple memorabilia.
Each of the Grandsons got 250,000.
The rest of his estate, properties, monetary assets, and worldly possessions, went to Avery Kylie Grambs. Only with the condition that she stay in the infamous Hawthorne house with the grandsons, his daughters plus one of their husbands, for a year. Why?
You’ll have to read it to find out.
The Inheritance Games is a riveting book. It had me on the edge of my seat, and personally I struggled to put it down. The unexpected Mysterious turn, mixed with the dash of romance, was simply a work of art. Contradicting the bad ratings, this book had mystery after mystery and was nowhere near being ‘slow.’ Additionally, Emily was born with a congenital heart condition. Her mother, who worked on Hawthorne land, asked for Grayson and Jameson to be a type of ‘protector’ for her in her day to day life. She tragically died by jumping off of a cliff into a body of water. Though thought to be okay at first, she passed away. Since she was taken there by Grayson, the second eldest Hawthorne brother, he blamed himself. Of course Jameson, the second to youngest Hawthorne brother, blamed him as well. This caused a lot of strife and competition between them. Over the time they both spent with her, they both fell in love with her adventurous and outgoing personality. It would only be realistic for a lot of the conflicts to be about her.
So, overall, The Inheritance Games is a BUY in my book.
