After years of waiting, the wicked movie is out and it’s everything fans could hope for in a big-screen musical. Exiting, emotional, and memorable. With colorful settings and special effects, its catchy songs, characters, and its journey about friendship, lessons, and staying true to yourself all together make the movie wonderful.
The film opens with all of Oz celebrating the death of the wicked witch, Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo. The start lines up with the ending of the original wizard of Oz when the witch is melted. Ariana Grande plays the good witch, Glinda. She floats down in her pink bubble to discuss with the town of OZ about the witches death. Someone asks the question, “Why does wickedness happen?” which leads to Glinda retelling the backstory of her and Elphaba at Shiz University. We learn that the wicked witch never had true evil in her heart, and all along the problem was the eyes of society.
The movie dives into some deep themes like the nature of good and evil, friendship, and identity. What makes the movie stand out so much is how it blends entertainment as well as meaningful storytelling. Elphaba’s backstory has viewers question how society treats the people who are “different” or don’t fit in.
The music was fantastic. Every song is catchy whether it’s something upbeat and fun, or emotional. Especially the songs “Defying gravity” and “Popular.” It’s all a mix of fun and drama that keeps you hooked. It’s amazing how it all ties together, along with the performances as well.
As much as there is good to the movie, It was longer than I was expecting, or at least it just felt like it was talking awhile. 2 hours and 40 minutes, and sometimes Id wonder when is was gonna end. But by the climatic parts is wasn’t a huge deal.
In the end, Wicked exceeded my expectations. Whether you’re someone who’s been obsessed with the musical for years or you’re new to the story, this movie is captivating. With all the great dancing, music, messages, and a lot more, its definitely worth watching especially if you’re a lover of musicals.
