Picture this: It’s a cold, rainy day, and you’re walking around Beaver, PA with an empty stomach and a craving for brunch food. Suddenly, you come across a friendly little diner advertising its delicious egg sandwiches, french toast, pancakes, and burgers. When you enter the building, the waitress greets you with a smile and says, “Welcome to Hash N Smash! Take a seat anywhere you’d like.”
As soon as you step inside of this charming eatery, you can feel the warm, friendly atmosphere surrounding you. Families sit at the various tables adorned with flowers and glass animal salt and pepper shakers, drinking coffee and calmly chatting about their lives, family gossip, and so on. The space can be generally described as retro with some eclectic elements, such as a vintage bike display in the window, random lawn flamingos on top of appliances, and a claw machine at the back of the room filled with rubber ducks. Overall, it’s a cozy, fun room with quirky elements that make it uniquely Hash N Smash’s. I’d give the appearance a 10/10.
The staff was wonderful, checking in on us occasionally but not excessively. Their mannerisms didn’t feel forced, like at some businesses, but genuinely happy to be working in their positions. They didn’t rush us into ordering or paying and worked at a generally relaxed pace. There were some points where they left us alone for a bit too long, though, like when we were ready to get the check and leave. The staff earned an 8/10.
As much as Hash N Smash is known for its phenomenal eggs and smash burgers, my boyfriend and I were in the mood for a more sweet option: French toast and blueberry pancakes. Both came with a side of either ham, bacon, or sausage, so we at least got to taste a portion of their sandwiches.
On first appearance, these dishes looked like your typical diner food. There weren’t any fancy touches to them, but they didn’t need any. The French toast was cooked to perfection. Its spongey texture absorbed the sticky syrup, so when you took a bite, your mouth erupted in a sweet, cinnamony sensation. The ham was thin, but juicy and full of flavor. It wasn’t too salty, unlike other breakfast meats. The only criticisms I have are that the French toast tasted a bit too much like the eggs they were cooked in, and the ham was a bit dry.
The blueberry pancakes, on the other hand, were light and fluffy. They tasted organic and not artificial like most blueberry flavored foods. They were sweet and sour at the same time, which was a fun flavor combination. As for the sausage, my boyfriend, who’s also a self-proclaimed food critic, described it as, “cooked to perfection” and “seasoned and flavored beautifully.” The food will receive an 8.5/10.
Overall, I have to give Hash N Smash a 9/10. The restaurant is great for casual brunches or dinners, and the menu is diverse enough for everyone to find something they like. It’s a very family-friendly establishment that showcases its relaxed environment and homemade food rather than your typical fast paced, processed eatery. If you’re ever in Beaver and want brunch or burgers, stop by Hash N Smash!
