REVIEW OF “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN”

A LOOK AT LINCOLN PARK’S FIRST SHOW OF THE SEASON

Electric and humorous from the very first scene, this musical stole the show. All about the life of the very best unreliable narrator, Frank Abagnale Jr. (Brett Barthelemy), the show slips through his life of crime, focusing on his love life and his many careers.

As his lies weave us through the story, we are met by a kid just trying to find his way in a jazz-filled world while experience FBI agent, Carl Hanratty (Tom Schaller) tracks him down through his paper trail.

The set was bright and could transform from a city to an FBI office to an apartment building all with a live band playing atop. The dancers moved around the stairs, climbing as they sing. It’s inventive and portrays how a TV special might look like back in the day of living color television.

I do have one complaint about this show and it has nothing to do with the actors or productions team, but rather for the Center itself. This was not a show that should have been performed by adolescents. If it had been all adults, I would not have this complaint, but because the actors and dancers in this show are minors, I feel that there needs to be some note about it. In the show, there is a lot of sexualization of the dancers, who are 18 or younger, and that’s not an appropriate thing to do. Again, no fault of the people working on the show, but it should not be that there is a show with mostly minors, that is as sexualized as this one was.

Other than that, this was a great start to the season, and I can’t wait to see more.
