Hey! I’m Tyson Florence, a sophomore W&P major from New Brighton. I am the newest addition to the SIREN team, working with the sports section. This is my first article and you can hope to see more from me in the future!
For the first time since 2015, the Lincoln Park Leopards boy’s basketball team did not make either the WPIAL or PIAA state championship. Last Friday, March 11th the boys played the Fairview Tigers at Sharon High School for the PIAA Quarterfinal game against Quaker Valley.
Sophomore health science major, Brandin Cummings, a Midland native, led the game in points with 28; close behind was Fairview’s Logan Frazao with 23.
The entire game was closely fought with Lincoln Park leading at the half 23-21. For a majority of the game Lincoln Park had a tight lead, though they couldn’t find a way to pull away. The third quarter they were able to keep the two point lead and end the quarter leading 39-37. When the 4th quarter hit Fairview upped the tempo and started to take the lead.
Following two free throws from Fairview’s James Sitter, that extended their lead to 45-39, Brandin Cummings drained a three pointer to cut the lead to 45-42. Then, Fairview hit another three pointer that stretched the lead to six. Then, following that three pointer, Cummings hit a jumper that cut Fairviews lead to four, 48-44. Fairview hit two foul shots to extend their lead again but Lincoln Park struck back with three foul shots of their own. With 11 seconds left Fairview’s Sitter hit another two foul shots making the score 52-48. Cummings hit another three making the score 51-52. During the next possession Cummings fouled out on the inbound and Fairview hit another two free throws with three seconds left. Lincoln Park attempted a half court buzzer beater, but missed ending regulation with the score being 54-51.
In the near future, look forward to seeing Skylar’s continuation of this article covering the upcoming spring sports!
