HOW TO START A COVEN
WITCHY WEDNESDAY
June 2, 2021
I’d like to start off this article by complaining about a common witchy problem… I freaking missed the full moon! Usually that’s not a big deal to me, but I legitimately had to cleanse something with a lot of celestial energy (such as the full moon), so now I have to wait another whole month!
But anyways, today we shall be discussing covens. I have tried to form a coven many times. It happened for a short while, but it’s a lot more difficult than you may think.
First off, let me start by explaining why you might want to be in a coven in the first place. Being in a coven multiplies the power of your spells, allows a deeper connection with other witches, and allows knowledge to be passed throughout the group. It is super handy and convenient, in other words.
However, initiating/joining a coven is not something to be taken lightly. You must fully trust the people in the coven, or else you put yourself at risk to be spiritually attacked, which is not fun. Anyone who has seen the 90’s movie, The Craft, knows what I’m talking about.
As well as this, covens deserve the same effort and treatment as any other group (such as a band, book club, etc.) It is not something you should start for fun and then abandon if things get boring or serious.
It is important to know that covens can be joined or initiated. Joining a coven may have different rules across the board. For example, some covens may have a certain ritual that must be performed to get into the coven. Others may require you to be of certain race or descent. It really is up to the High Priest or Priestess.
Which brings me to my next point: how should you initiate a coven? You must consider what you’re getting yourself into. Covens meet frequently, have reading assignments on spells and rituals, and require a close bond.
Consider the following:
Where will you meet/ where is your temple?
When will you meet?
What will you do once you meet?
Will there be rules?
How will you initiate new witches?
Is there a leader?
Now, with almost every coven, there is a High Priest or High Priestess. It is not what it sounds like. These individuals are not like the Pope or other catholic priests, they are simply the witches in the group that take the most initiative and have the most knowledge.
That’s pretty much it on how to start/join a coven. Though something else I suggest is having one witch of every element (earth, air, fire, water or taurus, gemini, aries, pisces). You dig?
Join me next week to learn about herb usage. Blessed be!
